About the Program

The Connecting to Care: Patient Guide program provides medical interpreters with new skills and professional development opportunities. This training program combines the principles of workforce development and the field of patient navigation to build the internal capacity of existing interpreter programs, while also providing experienced interpreters with new skills to better support their patients and the treatment team.

The Training of Trainers (ToT) course prepares trainers to conduct Connecting to Care trainings in their organizations and communities. The course is appropriate for staff members of agencies and organizations that employ interpreters in medical settings.

What You Learn

The Training of Trainers (ToT) course offers interactive and lecture-based training. Throughout the course, participants learn the skills necessary to implement the Connecting to Care training at their organization through short lectures, group discussions, and teach-back lessons. Participants receive tips and feedback on their teaching methods in order to develop their skills and train patient guides more effectively.

Who Should Apply

Hospitals and Clinics

Health care organizations can enhance the capabilities and expand the roles of their on-staff medical interpreters and patient navigators.

Community Nonprofits

Nonprofits that serve vulnerable populations can strengthen their staff’s ability to help their clients gain better access to health care services.

Human Services Agencies

Human services professionals who help individuals navigate the health care system can build skills to better serve their clients.

Requirements

To apply for this course, a candidate must be an authorized trainer for a Bridging the Gap licensed organization. To ensure the highest quality of training delivered, we require participants of the Connecting to Care: Training of Trainers (ToT) program to have the following qualifications:

  • Be an authorized trainer for a Bridging the Gap licensed organization
  • Have successfully completed Connecting to Care: Patient Guide Training
  • Have worked as a medical interpreter or patient navigator for at least two (2) years
  • Have training or teaching experience
  • Work for and be sponsored by the organization seeking the license to train CTC

The training gave the interpreters the skills, as well as examples of how and what to say when informing patients about the health care system. The staff now teach patients to engage with providers and to teach that this is an expectation: that patients should play an active, and not a passive role in their care.
