Connecting To Care: Patient Guide Training

The Training

This program provides 24 hours of in-person intensive training to support patient guidance outside of the interpreted event. The training expands the interpreter’s knowledge base to include patient education, patient navigation and cultural competency. The training provides the opportunity to earn 2.4 IMIA CEUs. Connecting to Care is a skills-based training that provides important professional skills that will enhance the interpreter’s daily work with patients and the treatment team.

 

Core Curriculum

  • Professional Skill and Ethics. Guidelines for establishing your expanded role in the treatment team

  • Working with Vulnerable Populations. Understanding the unique needs, realities and barriers to care of diverse patient populations

  • Cultural Competency. Skills to build a deeper understanding of the impact of culture in health care and effective cross-cultural communication skills to serve as a culture broker in more advanced ways

  • Communication Skills. Skills to facilitate patient and provider communications before, during and after appointments to ensure open communication

  • System Education and Coaching. Skills and information to teach patients about the health care system and promote patient independence

  • The U.S. Health Care System Today. An overview of the Affordable Care Act, important accrediting bodies and standards in health care delivery

Continuing Education Units

Connecting to Care has been approved to provide CEUs for certified interpreters. The training has been endorsed to provide:

  • IMIA Interpreter CEUs

Course Options

  • Open Enrollment Courses. Interpreters from around the country are invited to come to Seattle to participate in an open enrollment training. These trainings are scheduled regularly throughout the year. Open enrollment course is followed by a Training of Trainers course.
